Students' Participation in Extra-curricular Activities
Our extra-curricular activities are designed to help students grow and develop academically, morally, aesthetically, physically, and socially. They provide leadership training, team-work experience and the development of communication skills, a sense of belonging, responsibility, and organizing ability.
We have 8 academic clubs, 20 interest groups, 8 service groups, 6 sports teams, a symphony orchestra, a Chinese orchestra and more than 20 instrumental classes. Apart from a good variety of activities organized by the academic and interest clubs, we encourage students to participate in inter-school activities and competitions to further increase their self-confidence, gain experience outside our school environment and strengthen their inter-personal skills.

The most outstanding achievements were as follows: In 2008-2009, in the Hong Kong Schools Sports Federation inter-school competitions, we won championship in Volleyball (Division II) Girls Overall. We were the 3rd runner-up in both swimming (Division III) and Basketball (Division II) Boys Overall. In Visual Arts, two of our students won the Outstanding Award in the Exhibition of Secondary School Studentsˇ¦ Creative Visual Arts Work 2008-09. In music, the school continued to develop the Symphonic Orchestra and the Chinese Orchestra. The school choir, trained by Mr. Man Lec San, gave performances in major school functions. In the 60th Hong Kong Schools Music Festival, students who took part in instrumental competitions achieved encouraging results. We had champions in Piano Solo, Sheng Solo and Zheng Solo. Chan Tin Chi of 4A won the championship in the 4th China Youth Arts Festival (Chinese Instrument Youth & Children Group D ˇV Hong Kong Selection Contest). Two of our students won the championship and the 1st runner-up in the Putonghua Singing Competition for Primary and Secondary Schools.
Apart from sports, arts and music activities, we encourage students to participate in a good variety of competitions. In the 60th Hong Kong Schools Speech Festival, our school won the championships in both the English and Chinese Solo Verse Speaking and 62 Certificates of Merits. In the Hong Kong School Drama Festival organized by EDB, 33 of our students received the Outstanding Cooperation Award. Liu Carole of 1B was awarded the outstanding performer in the English ˇ§Drama Fest 2009ˇ¨ organized by the Association of English Medium Secondary Schools. Our Debating Teams had a fruitful year. The English Debating Team was the 2nd runner-up in the Sing Tao Inter-school Debating Competition. The Chinese Debating Team was 1st runner-up in the 8th Multi-vision on Basic Law Secondary School Debating Competition and the 3rd runner-up in the Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups Debating Competition. Huang Jeffery, Leung Sze Nga and Kwok Kwan Nang of 6B, Li Tsz Hoi of 5A, Leung Man Yin of 3B and Chow Hiu Man of 3C were named the Best Debators in the competitions.
Six of our students won the 1st runner-up in the 2009 MATE International ROV (Remotely Operated Vehicles) Competition (HK Region) organized by the Marine Advanced Technology Education Centre. HK Red Cross Youth Unit 27 won championships in the Hong Kong Island Division First Aid Competition and the Nursing Competition. Yeung Chi Yeung of 7B won the champion and the Best Leader in the Adult First Aid Competition held by the Hong Kong Red Cross.
6 of our S2 students led by Poon Lai Lok of 6B won the 2nd runner-up in the Commandantˇ¦s Award 2009 organized by the HK Air Cadet Corps Aviation Education Squadron. Chow Lok Yi of 4B won the Outstanding Volunteers Award in the Youth Volunteers Award Scheme. Heung Lai Nga of 3D won the Best Performance Award in the 4th HK East Joint School Leadership Training Program. Wong Sum Yee of 3D was nominated and won a chance to participate in the Youth Astronaut Experiential Camp in Beijing organized by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department.
We tried to extend our studentsˇ¦ learning experiences beyond the school context by organizing a number of indoor and outdoor programs to develop their interests and potential. An Adventure Training Camp was organized for S1. A 6-hour social service program was mandated for S2, reaching out to the elderly, the homeless and alone. 25 selected S4 students participated in the Jockey Club Adventure Ship Buddies Programme in which they paired up with visually-impaired students. Students were enlightened and much more positive attitude was observed among them. Leadership Training was given to S6 students and club committee members.
